What you need to know when moving apartments: Out with the old, in with the new, and everything in between! (link to previously blog post)

When you rent an apartment in Israel, there is a tedious process of packing and unpacking from your old apartment to your new apartment. We have compiled a list of suggestions below to help you be more prepared. Out With The Old – If you have time to move, ideally the best thing would be to go through, and purge items you no longer need or are too old before having them take up space in your box to your new home. Unfortunately, not many of us have this much time in advance to purge, if that is the case, then the best thing to do is go through your boxes while you are unpacking them. This way old apartment junk won’t take up space in your new, fresh, and clean home.

Fragile: Do not Break! – When you rent an apartment in Israel and it comes to packing, some items can just be thrown into a box, however, others must be handled with care. If fragile and delicate items are not packaged properly you will risk them being damaged or destroyed by the time they arrive at the new house. Though this can be time consuming, it must be done. You can either choose to hire a packing company to do so, or you can do it yourself. If you decide to take the risky road of self-packing fragile items, make sure to have the appropriate materials needed for such a task.

Be sure not to use old boxes as they are most-probably worn, and carry plenty of germs, and may not hold enclosed items all that great. It’s best not to drag all the garbage back with your precious items. This would be something worth investing in when preparing for your big move.  You will also need packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper to wrap glasses and other breakables with.

A Work in Progress – Some people may pack according to the category of items, while others find it more worth-while to pack according to room. What will work best for you? Try and think about which will make unpacking easier for you. Then, you’ll know which direction to go.

Think Twice – When it comes to taking apart cabinets and closets to bring along with you, be prepared that you may not be able to rebuild it. Pieces may get lost throughout the move, and some of the more inexpensive furniture (such as pressed wood) may not hold up being taken down and rebuilt. It may be time to reevaluate your pieces of furniture and see what will withstand being taken apart, and rebuilt, and what is best to leave behind and replace.

Garbage – Lastly, make sure you clean up after yourself. Whether when leaving your old apartment or unpacking at your new apartment. You don’t want to start off on the wrong side with your new neighbors. Not to mention, if you leave a big enough mess you may just need to pay a fine for it.
